Silicon: Microsoft offers surprise support for LinuxOct 14, 1998, 13:57 (2 Talkback[s])
Software giant Microsoft has confirmed rumours that it is planning to develop a version of its video playing software, Media Player, for the Linux operating system.
According to industry expert Clive Longbottom, Microsoft is porting Media Player to Linux as part of its campaign to avert the attentions of the US Department of Justice (DoJ), in the wider context of ongoing anti-trust law suits.
"Provided that Microsoft can be seen to be accepting that there is a viable alternative out there, the DoJ cannot come down too hard on them for uncompetitive practices," he said.
