"Linux, which started out as software used by Torvalds and five
long-haired programmers, is updated and improved by a vast network
of programmers but it is not owned by any company."
"IDC said that Linux, while it ranks number four after Microsoft
Corp.'s Windows NT software, grew 212 percent in 1998, jumping to
740,000 units shipped in 1998, versus 248,000 units in 1997. Linux
had 17.2 percent of the network operating systems market, compared
with a 36 percent share for NT."
