"Compaq Computer Corp. is giving up on efforts to make its powerful Alpha processor chips compatible with Windows 2000, the next version of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT operating system. Compaq says it has disbanded the 100-person team working on the project and that some of them will likely be laid off.
"''We do not plan to support 32-bit Windows 2000 on Alpha systems,'' said Compaq spokesman Jim Finlaw... Compaq will concentrate on selling Alpha-based machines that run the Unix and Linux operating systems."
