(Other stories by Jaikumar Vijayan)

"There will be no future releases of Microsoft Corp. products -- including 64-bit Windows NT support -- for Compaq Computer Corp.'s Alpha platform.

Beginning with Release Candidate 2, there will be no 32-bit Windows 2000 support, nor will there be new 32-bit Alpha releases of SQL Server, Exchange or other 32-bit Alpha BackOffice products, the company said.

There will also be no 64-bit versions of Windows or BackOffice developed for the Alpha platform, according to a posting on Microsoft's Web site."

"The Microsoft announcement... flies in the face of Compaq's assurances to provide 64-bit NT support on Alpha."
