"I chatted with Uwe Thiem, KDE developer and author of KDE Application Development, recently via email. We discussed his first experiences using KDE, the strengths and weaknesses of the KDE application development environment, what's planned for KDE 2.0, and more."

"When did you first encounter KDE? What did you think of it then, and how have your thoughts changed as KDE has evolved to its current state?"

"Uwe Thiem: Early in 1997, a friend of mine and I were discussing LyX, a graphical front end to the well-known typesetting system TeX/LaTeX. While I was arguing that LyX was the best thing that could have happened to UNIX and X, he pointed out that Matthias Ettrich, the founder of the LyX project, had founded another major project for X: KDE. While I wasn't impressed much at first because I knew CDE [a precursor of KDE] and its shortcomings, I tried it out anyway ... and was blown away from the start. Please bear in mind that Matthias Ettrich sent out his original call for programmers in October, 1996, so the whole project was only a couple of months old then."
