In this part, I focus on desktops that are either compact or programmable. The two articles cover a lot of ground, but by no means do they give an exhaustive coverage of all the desktop environments available, although most of the remaining environments have a limited audience."

"The compact offerings are LWM, created by Elliott Hughes; CTWM, by Claude Lecommandeur; and IceWM, by Marko Macek. The programmable options comprise a pair of Lisp environments in the form of Scwm and Sawmill, as well as TkDesk in the Tcl/Tk environment. Most desktop managers are programmable to some extent, but Lisp and Tcl/Tk bring a bit more generality to the table. Also, the programmable support of these desktops is often available separately both within and without the environment. For example, Tcl is a standalone package that TkDesk uses, and Sawmill's librep is a Lisp scripting environment."
