(Other stories by Joe Wilcox)

"The Justice Department and 19 states today asked a federal judge to break Microsoft into two pieces to prevent the company from further abusing its monopoly position in the software market."

"In a 17-page proposal, the Justice Department and the states argue that Microsoft's Windows operating system should be separated from applications such as word processors and spreadsheets."

"The proposed remedy, which the judge overseeing the case is not obligated to accept, marks the latest step in the historic antitrust suit against Microsoft--a case that has sharply divided detractors and supporters of the software behemoth.
