"Why do we choose free/open source software? There are many reasons for that, of course. Some say that one of those reasons is because even if the original vendor of the software discontinued its development, somebody (or you) can take over the development and keep it being maintained and improved, so that you can keep using the software in an up-to-date environment. Others say one of their reasons is because "Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow," especially when the software's development is done under the bazaar model."

"Do these reasons apply only for software? Here are a couple of projects which stretch the open source model beyond the software world."
