"Linux keeps the Jordan Heart Research Foundation's functions pumping solidly, according to Dr. Tom Watkins, laboratory director at the Montclair, N.J. facility. Watkins, a heart researcher investigating the link between nutritional compounds and cardiovascular disease, uses Linux at home and recently converted half the machines in his clinic to Linux."

"Most of Watkins' studies involve blood or body fluid chemistry studies involving numerical values for multitudes of substances. Those numbers, once obtained, must be manipulated for data profiles and interpreted. Windows NT, Watkins said, crashed repeatedly, costing time and money. "Right in the middle of number-crunching, for example, or some other office-type function, like making graphics for presentations, we'd crash," Watkins said."

"After replacing Windows NT with Linux, Watkins noticed another benefit. "When I did the first test, I found out it just runs faster and easier. The machines are running more efficiently," he explained. Watkins now has half the lab happily converted to Netscape, Corel WordPerfect, StarOffice and other Linux applications. "I have a CTX laptop with only 150 MHz," Watkins said, "that runs faster on Linux than the 300 and 400 MHz machines run on Windows.""
