"The Internet is in the midst of a transformation that will soon see automobiles turned into "mobile portals," printers becoming "smart devices" that produce stamps and e-mail messages, and Web access becoming as readily available and reliable as water and electricity, North America's top female executive said yesterday."

"'We are entering a fundamentally different phase of the Internet,' Carly Fiorina, chairwoman, CEO and president of Hewlett-Packard Co., told a gathering of IT specialists at an Intel Corp. event. 'Any asset, process or service that can be digitized is going to be delivered over the Internet.'"

"The transformation is being driven by improved hardware and software and open standards such as the Linux operating system. A key part of the emerging technology is Intel's new Itanium processor being rolled out this quarter for mid-range and high-end servers and workstations, Ms. Fiorina said."
