"As the battle for dominance in the Linux desktop environment heats up, Dell Computer Corp. will announce next week that it has taken a significant stake in Linux software developer Eazel Inc. Dell will also start shipping Eazel's network user environment with all its Linux-based desktop and notebook products starting early next year."

"The deal extends the "holy war" between GNOME and KDE (K Desktop Environment). Dell is clearly favoring the GNOME project, with Michael Massetti, Dell's software marketing director, admitting he hoped this deal would make Dell's Linux desktop offering more competitive with KDE."

"While both Dell and Eazel declined to disclose financial details, Massetti said the deal was similar to others Dell had done with Linuxcare Inc., TurboLinux Inc., Red Hat Inc. and CollabNet Inc. "Dell Ventures, our investment arm, has entered into agreements with all of these companies as we work together to grow and improve the market," he said. The Eazel deal is another cog in improving Linux from a customer usability perspective, and it ensures that Dell's Linux customers have access to a state-of-the-art file manager on the GNOME platform, he said."
