Siliconvalley.Internet.com: OpenGL 2.0 Working Group Formed

"Silicon Graphics, Inc. says the time has come to advance the OpenGL standard.

"The Mountain View, Calif.-based graphics company and inventor of the application programming interface (API) Wednesday announced the formation of the OpenGL 2.0 working group in concert with its governing Architecture Review Board (ARB). The spec is currently in version 1.4.

"Software developers use OpenGL to create interactive 2D and 3D visual applications for computer systems ranging from consumer PCs to graphics workstations and supercomputers. The spec is available on all other major computer platforms, including IRIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Compaq, BeOS, Windows NT, Windows 98 and Mac OS.

"The formation of the group, approved at the June 2002 OpenGL ARB meeting, is expected to push the standard forward and depress a patent claim by Microsoft..."
