"RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser continued to beat the drum for open source at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2003 here--this time, in the form of Real's newly released open-source digital-rights-management (DRM) system.

"RealNetworks released a beta of the PC version of its Helix DRM system at the conference on Thursday, and announced that Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, EMI Recorded Music and other content providers have signed up to use the system.

"'DRM systems were tied to specific formats--up until yesterday,' Glaser said. 'DRM systems were DOA systems...'"
