:GNOME 2.6 Desktop & Developer Platform BETA 2 (2.5.91) Released
GNOME 2.6 Desktop & Developer Platform BETA 2 (2.5.91) Released Mar 13, 2004, 13 :00 UTC (0 Talkback[s]) (12791 reads)
Announcing... The second BETA release of the GNOME 2.6 Desktop & Developer
Platform! That's right - it's almost here, and it's your chance to have a
sneak preview, and hopefully beat out some of the last remaining bugs before
our final release. ;-) You can find a summary of the changes between 2.5.91
and the previous 2.5.90 release below (which now documents updated modules
that didn't have NEWS entries too).
This "BETA" release is not the final GNOME 2.6 release, but is intended for
widespread testing among our user community. Like the Linux kernel, GNOME
uses odd minor version numbers to indicate development status. Please check
the 2.5 start page for more information:
Some very basic packages not distributed with this release, such as
image libraries, popt, and the freedesktop.org libraries collection.
Most of these will be included with or available for your distribution,
except the 'shared-mime-info' and 'hicolor-theme' modules - if you don't
install those, your desktop will look ugly, but it will work. :-)
Docbook DTD 4.1.2, Docbook XSL stylesheets and a valid system catalogue
file for scrollkeeper (which in turn is required by many desktop
components for documentation).

This is the release candidate for 2.6. In an ideal world there would be
no major bugs in this release. Here in the real world there will be a
brown-paper-bag bug discovered tomorrow. You could be the one to report
it and cause me hideous embarrassment ! Go ahead, you know you want
to.
Since 2.5.7 the only changes have been bug-fixes, documentation
updates and more translations.
This is the long-awaited beta for 2.6. As far as I know there are no
bugs that crash any of the the games or make them unplayable. I expect
this to change once you test it and file what you find in
Bugzilla. The documentation is the only thing expected to change
before 2.6.0.
So what is new this time ?
Bug fixes.
Gnometris now has some basic documentation.
There is a new tileset for mahjongg thanks to Gonzalo Odiard.
