osViews: Is Open Source Development Condemned to Just the 'Sexy' Projects?

One constant in the debate surrounding Open Source Software has been the claim that Open Source Software has only a limited claim on the heartstrings of software developers because most PC userland software such as accounting packages, etc., is not as 'sexy' as compilers, etc. So they won't be developed, or won't develop quite as fast as compilers, etc.

"Precisely who is to be turned on, or off, by accounting packages, compilers, bug trackers, text editors, etc. isn't made clear. The picture one is given is that of the software developer as a student, or some other person free from all constraints or responsibilities.

"What an interesting idea. All students? No adult responsibilities...?"
