"Mono is an open source project to create a free implementation of Microsoft's .Net Development Framework as an alternative to Microsoft's Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE). Mono takes advantage of the command line versions of the C# and Visual Basic .Net compilers freely available as part of Microsoft's .Net Software Development Kit.
