"Con Kolivas released 2.6.7-ck5, his kernel patchset aimed at improving system responsiveness with emphasis on the desktop. A fan of the patchset asked when some of this work would be merged into the mainline kernel, launching an interesting discussion between Con and 2.6 stable Linux kernel maintainer, Andrew Morton.

"Con provided two patches, 'autoswap' and 'vm_autoregulate', aimed at automatically tuning system swappiness. Also included were benchmark results, showing dramatic improvements on a system under swap. Andrew didn't yet sound completely sold on the idea, but was interested enough to provide some constructive feedback on how to improve the patches and get them into a state that they might be merged..."
