KernelTrap: Running On Xbox

Sep 30, 2004, 08:30 (0 Talkback[s])

"Ed Schouten posted a small patch against 2.6.9-rc2, hoping to merge support for Linux on Xbox into the mainline kernel. Citing the goal of getting increased user and distribution adoption, and the fact that the project has been around since 2001 as reasons for inclusion, the proposal received minimal endorsement. However, 2.6 maintainer Andrew Morton announced earlier that he'd be offline much of this week, so the proposal may get more attention when he returns.

"An earlier request to merge Xbox support was denied by Linux creator Linus Torvalds who noted that he wanted to see the port being more widely used before being merged. He explained then, 'why? Simply because for now it's still a fairly specialized thing, and as such I have to weigh the benefits of including it in the standard kernel against the negatives of just being a bit politically 'hot potato'...'"
