"A commercial software company will spend a significant amount of effort on the "50,000 foot view" of what it wants to do with its software and what its research tells it the market is in demand of.

"A commercial software company wants to enter the RFID space? Sure, just throw 100 engineers and marketing people at the task and a few years later the market has a new whiz bang RFID application to choose for whatever RFID ambitions it has.

"Open source RFID? First look for a standard and develop software around it and hope the result is adopted en mass.

"Product development is where commercial software has the advantage -- even if the commercial service is built with open source components like the Googles and Facebooks of the world."
