Nokia prepping first Linux phone?

"So far, the Linux-based Maemo OS has appeared mostly in Internet tablets from Nokia. Distributed commercially as "Tablet OS 200x," Maemo powered Nokia's original ARM9-based 700 tablet, as well as the new ARM11-based N800 and keyboard-equipped N810 tablets. Nokia has not shipped a new Maemo-based tablet in several years, however.

"The Financial Times story and countless follow-up reports suggest that Nokia looks to Maemo to help it better compete with RIM and Apple. As a Linux-based OS, Maemo may offer greater hardware support, more open source applications to choose from, and a more rapid pace of development, reports note. Like Palm with its "Garnet" virtual machine for legacy Palm apps, Nokia would presumably offer some type of support technology to enable the continued use of existing S60 applications."
