Illuminating the Illumos Project

"The Illumos Project is an ambitious one; its goal is to release a completely open source operating system based on Oracle's Solaris OS. The Illumos community got a huge jolt recently when a leaked memo revealed Oracle's plans to effectively kill the OpenSolaris Project, the formerly leading open source Solaris. In many ways, the death of OpenSolaris may invigorate Illumos. One of the key promises of the Illumos Project is that it will be truly independent: no disgruntled upstream vendor will ever be able to kill it. This is a noble project that may one day stand alongside Linux as a free and open alternative to locked-down systems. In this article, I will shed some light on Illumos.
