CRN: Support For Linux-Over-Unix Grows

"Just a few weeks after Caldera Systems detailed plans to
acquire the server software division and professional services arm
of Unix vendor The Santa Cruz Operation (SCO), two other Unix
operating system vendors are weighing in with Linux
support."
"IBM last week said its forthcoming AIX 5L, which will run on
both Intel's IA-64 architecture and IBM's upcoming Power4-based
Regatta Unix server fleet, will include Linux APIs and a GNU
toolset. The toolset is aimed at enabling developers to build Linux
applications and recompile them on AIX."
"Hewlett-Packard took the Linux-over-Unix concept one step
further by planning to announce this week an upcoming capability
within HP-UX that will allow Linux-based applications to run
natively on HP-UX servers running on Intel's IA-64 platform. HP
will add a very thin layer,the Linux Runtime Environment,to HP-UX
sometime next year, the company says."
