"Compaq is planning a series of acquisitions to boost its
enterprise software and services capability - but chief
executive Michael Capellas rules out Linux playing a major part in
the company's high-end strategy."
"Despite claiming that Compaq hardware is the number one
Linux platform, Capellas dismissed the operating system as a
serious option for most companies. "We don't see Linux
cannibalising Microsoft Windows at all. It will sit on the
periphery replacing products such as SCO Unix," he said."
"In an apparent dig at the $1 billion IBM is spending on Linux,
Capellas said: "It will take a huge investment to make Linux into
an enterprise solution. We don't believe that's the way to go."
