IBM's AlphaWorks development team has released an alpha-level preview of JDK 1.3 for Linux running on Intel's Itanium (IA64) hardware. According to the web site, this is a very early preview, and is missing such features as ODBC database connectivity (JDBC-ODBC bridge), sound, and the Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler needed for high performance. On the other hand, XFree86 4.0.1 is supported.
The reference test platform at IBM is the August 28, 2000 release of TurboLinux for IA64. The JDK alpha code is available for free download from the IBM web site.
