Australian IT: Universities' $8m Linux Foray

"The Queensland Parallel Supercomputing Foundation (QPSF) expects to complete installation of the systems in February, making it one of the first users of the newly launched Itanium 2-based Linux SGI machines worldwide...

"QPSF acting chief executive Ian Atkinson said the foundation had acquired a 64-node Altix 3700 system with 64Gb of memory for use in production, and a 16-node system to be used as an interactive graphical system.

"Atkinson said this was the first time QPSF had bought systems based either on Intel processors or the Linux operating system..."
