'Linux'--I heard the word for the first time just five years
back at one of Ray Feeney's RFX barbeques. RFX is one of the
premiere systems integrators for the film production industry, and
dealt primarily with SGI hardware back then. I was a digital
animator and instructor, into the business a few years earlier
thanks to Ray.
"Spoken by David Perkins, then chief computer technician and
overall systems guru at RFX (now at Rhythm and Hues), this strange
sounding word--'Linux'--took me by surprise.
"'What's Linux?' I asked.
"'The future.' He said.
"It stood to reason that someone working for Ray Feeney would
speak prophetically about software used in film production. Ray is
the recipient of no less than five academy awards for technical
achievement in film, the last of which, a lifetime achievement
award, came just last year.
"This article describes how that prophetic statement about Linux
