"When Karl Kopper joined United National Foods in Auburn, Calif. as an IT consultant, he had his work cut out for him. The company's solitary server was going down every day to the tune of $1,000 a minute in lost revenue. End users would often complain about the system's slow response time. He says, 'Because we couldn't print the forms for the warehouse people to select the products to be put on the truck, we'd have dozens of truck drivers sitting in the break room each day for more than 10 minutes.'
