"Despite the low version number (the current stable release is 0.8.4), Cassandra has proved itself capable of handling massive workloads. The real question is whether it's suitable for any of your workloads.

Jonathan Ellis, chair of the Apache Cassandra project, sums it up pretty succinctly. The difference between traditional databases like MySQL and Cassandra, he says, is the difference between analytic big data and real-time big data.
