Thanks to theHippo for this report.

The Internet Operating System Counter www.leb.net/hzo/ioscount surveys OS internet usage and catalogues the numbers and percentages of WWW, FTP and news servers in selected countries.

I've selected countries in the April '99 list which I perceive as high users of the internet (this is purely due to personal recognition of domain names). Using the list, I have tabulated the positions of each OS in these selected countries. This list is sorted such that priority is given to the OS on the left hand side (i.e. Linux, followed by BSD, etc.). The results are as follows:

                                    BSD MS-Win Solaris/
                        Linux Family 95/98/NT SunOS Irix

Discussion notes:

  • Linux is competing head to head with MS OS-es in Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, France, Denmark, Norway, Italy and Switzerland (9 countries), i.e. both OS-es occupy the first or second positions in these countries.
  • Linux is competing head to head with Solaris/SunOS in Germany, Portugal, Hungary and Finland (4 countries), i.e. both OS-es occupy the first or second positions in these countries.
  • MS OS-es is the preferred OS in France, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and US educational instituitions (8 countries/instituition).
  • MS OS-es has its weakest presence in The Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Hungary, United Kingdom and Finland (6 countries).
  • Solaris/SunOS is competing head to head with MS OS-es in Belgium, Spain, Sweden and US educational instituitions (4 countries/instituition), i.e. both OS-es occupy either the first or second positions in these countries.
  • Russia and the UK are unique in that they have BSD as their OS of choice. The Free/Net/Open variants of the various BSD versions is the OS of choice in both coutries (see full survey for proper figures).
  • BSD and its variants have an especially weak presence in Hungary, US educational instituitions, Switzerland and Sweden in that particular order.
  • US educational instituitions, Belgium, Spain and Sweden have a preference for commercial OS-es.
  • Sun's Solaris/SunOS has their strongest presence in Sweden and Finland and the weakest in the Czech Republic.
  • SGI's Irix has their strongest presence in Switzerland and the weakest in Slovakia.
  • The Netherlands is at the top of the list and US educational instituitions are at the bottom purely due to the way the list is sorted, i.e. preference is given to Linux and BSD variants.
