News-Observer/AP: Dell extends its Linux use to PowerEdge; Red Hat gets red hot

"Red Hat Inc. got red hot Monday when Dell Computer Corp. announced it was factory-installing the Linux operating system on a line of computers, becoming the first major manufacturer to do so."

"It's pretty significant that they are doing a factory install of Linux right from Dell's service factory and it's across the whole Intel server line they have," said Barry Jaruzelski, an analyst with Booz-Allen & Hamilton in New York. "This displays a much higher commitment...."

"Dell spokesman Bruce Anderson said installing Linux was a "careful step" based on consumer demand."
