IT-Analysis: SAP ships Linux to first 100 customers

"Almost one year ago, SAP became the first major applications company to commit to Linux. SAP's market leading R/3 ERP system is now generally available on this platform and has already shipped to 100 customers. One of these is Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe. A spokesman for this company referred to the 'technical quality, reliability and stability of the Linux operating system for running R/3'. Leverage of existing Unix skills was also mentioned. SAP refers to 'tremendous demand' for this solution and is very bullish about its potential. The rest of the mySAP.com product portfolio, CRM, APO and so on, will be released on Linux in due course."

In true SAP style, the have invested time making sure that all of the quality and services related issues have been dealt with before announcing general availability. ... The Critical enterprise enhancements in this [Red Hat 6.1 Enterprise Version 1.0] version of Linux include full native language support that makes it suitable for multinational, mission-critical applications. SAP is also leveraging its significant influence with hardware partners and systems integrators to ensure that end-to-end support for the Linux release is available."
