"Linux is not immune to the IT industry's climactic shift in focus to services. A handful of vendors, including Silicon Graphics Inc., Mission Critical Linux LLC and Andover.Net Inc., will highlight the "S" word at the LinuxWorld trade show in New York starting Tuesday."

"The challenges specific to Linux's underpinnings make it a natural candidate for third-party services. The flexibility Linux offers as an open-source environment can also make it hard for companies to get their arms around development projects."

"That's where companies such as SGI, Mission Critical and Andover come in. Each will offer services designed to get enterprise customers up and running on Linux without the constraints of doing its own application development."
