"In an interview on Bloomberg Television today, Bill Gates announced that 'Microsoft Corporation would be willing to open the source code for its Windows software to competitors in order to settle the antitrust case filed by the US Department of Justice.'"
"It's unclear, however, just what Gates means by "open the source code." Does he mean licensing it like Linux, under the GPL? Does he mean the more-proprietary "community source" software, a la Sun Microsystems? Does he mean licensing Windows to select competitors who keep it proprietary? Or something altogether different?"
"For years, Microsoft has been saying that Windows is in fact an open system, pointing out that it openly publishes Windows APIs."
