WideOpenNews: Novell Getting Serious about Linux
Feb 28, 2000, 19:19 (1 Talkback[s])
"A directory like NDS lets systems administrators manage and
control far-flung networks of users from their own desktops.
Windows 2000 is being shipped with a new directory of its own,
called Active Directory. Marrying NDS and Linux is an obvious,
and long anticipated, move -- particularly now that Novell has made
clear that NDS, and not its NetWare networking operating system, is
its cornerstone product for the future. Linux gains a critical
application, and the association with Novell may further legitimize
Linux in the eyes of Novell's customer base, which ranges from
mom-and-pop businesses to the world's largest corporations."
"The marriage will also offer the Linux community a line of
ancillary apps. InfoWorld reports that Novell is beginning to
outline features of its next version of GroupWise, groupware
similar to Lotus Notes that offers email, calendar, and group
messaging services, among others. Code-named Bulletproof, the
upcoming release is expected to incorporate XML and be managed
entirely from NDS."
