"The Linux Professional Institute, the LPI, is a non-profit organization working on Linux certification. We recently had a chance to interview Evan Leibovitch, one of the founders and current board members of the LPI about the current state of LPI certification and where they are going."

"Erik: This is a basic question, what does the LPI do and why does it feel necessary to do what it does?

LPI provides a necessary (but certainly not the only) requirement of the corporate computing world's acceptance of Linux as a usable platform. Beyond the technical issues, companies need to know of the existence of skilled Linux people with a quantifiable minimum level of knowledge. LPI's main goal at this time is to provide a professional certification program, specifically to address this need."

"Jeremy: What prompted the creation of LPI? What reasons led to its incorporation as a non-profit organization.

LPI started as two parallel efforts which merged into one. I was involved in the formation of CLUE, the Canadian Linux Users' Exchange (http://www.linux.ca). In early 1998 we asked our membership 'what do you believe Linux needs to be more accepted in business' and the overwhelmingly most popular answer was certification. To that end a mailing list started to discuss the issue and attracted quite an interesting array of people."
