Information Week: Dell Digs Deeper Into Linux

"Dell Computer and Red Hat Inc. are devoting more engineering talent and technical support to their Linux customers. The partnership, revealed today, is part of Dell's plan to steal Web-server market share from Unix vendors."

"Dell and Red Hat unveiled what they call a one-source alliance through which they will develop versions of Red Hat Linux optimized for Dell servers and speed work on increasing the reliability and availability of the open-source operating system. The pair will train more Dell support staff to field calls from companies running Red Hat's software. The companies also disclosed a Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. contract that calls for Toyota to buy more than 1,400 Dell Powerapp.web 100 thin servers loaded with Red Hat Linux."

"Michael Lambert, senior VP for Dell's enterprise systems group, says the company won't try to switch Windows customers to Linux, but rather will use the open-source system to compete against Unix offerings from Compaq, IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Hewlett-Packard in the Internet-appliance and rack-mounted general-purpose server markets."
