ZDNet: How do you install AOL Instant Messenger for KDE?

Jul 29, 2000, 22:39 (1 Talkback[s])

"I am trying to install AOL Instant Messenger for Linux. It came in .sh format. When I click on it (to install) I get the error:

Could not execute program aim_linux.sh

Do I need to get a special archiver program for this file? Is there another way to install AIM for Linux? Does it come in another format?"

"The program you mentioned in your original messages is made by AOL, and is a java application. It wasn't specifically designed for Linux but it does run on Linux if you have Java properly installed."

"You can get AIM like applications for Linux from a couple of places. GAIM seems to be the most popular and furthest along. There are others as well, like KAIM (which keeps changing its name so don't count on finding it), LAIM which pretty much has stopped building an interface and is just building a library, EveryBuddy which does connect with AIM server as well as ICQ, and Jabber which, last I knew, still had issues with connecting to the AIM servers. Finally there is Tik which was also built by AOL and requires TCL."
