"Alex: Linking files and directories is easy, and makes your life easier. For example, Star Office 5.2 by default makes a work directory called ~/office52/user/work, which it uses to store your work. I find it convenient to store all my work in the same directory. When using other programs, though, I find it annoying to type that long pathname over and over to get to my work, so I've made a link from ~/work to ~/office52/user/work."
