GNUstep Receives Help from VMware

VMware Inc., a company well known for its PC virtualizer software, has responded positively to the GNUstep project team who asked for free VMware Workstation 3.0 licenses.

The four licenses donated by VMWare Inc. to the GNUstep project will allow GNustep developers to run Openstep 4.2 while developing GNUstep on their Linux workstation. Although the OpenStep operating system is no longer supported, it is still a useful reference for the GNUstep implementation and the new Cocoa Framework of MAC OS X is also heavily based on the OpenStep specification.

GNUstep, a project from the Free Software Foundation, provides an Object-Oriented application development framework and tool set for use on a wide variety of computer platforms. GNUstep is based on the original OpenStep specification provided by NeXT, Inc. (now Apple). GNUstep is becoming more and more stable every day and is used in a production environment by several companies.

VMware Inc. offers VMware workstation 3.0, a software product that allows you to run many guest operating systems on a single Linux or Windows workstation. Free 30 day evaluation licenses are available from the VMware Web site. Although not officially supported by VMware, Openstep 4.2 for Intel runs on VMware 3.0 Workstation.
