"*NIX isn't an OS; it's a philosophy, a way of doing things.

I don't know if I fully agree with this view or not, but I will say that the power of the *NIX approach to data pipelining â€" i.e., having the ability to pipe data from any given tool to any other given tool â€" is powerful. If you're willing to devote the time to learning how to manipulate those tools, then you can perform very deep magic indeed.

But what about those who aren't that interested in hardcore brute computing power, but just want to be able to browse the Web, balance their checkbooks, and play a game or two? They're fed up with the constant security holes that pop up in the various versions of Windows and Outlook and so forth, and so they're looking for a viable, user-friendly alternative to Microsoft, but they're supremely uninterested in becoming *NIX uber-hackers."
