AJC.COM: Trip to Wal-Mart Proves Linux Has Reached the Masses

I get the willies when a reader urges me to write about Linux.
Don't get me wrong. Linux is a powerful and stable operating
system, more stable than the various editions of Windows, including
XP.
And there's nothing wrong with the readers who urge me on. I
admire them. Nowadays most home computer users are appliance
operators. They know where the on switch is and how to click open a
program to start it up. That's perfectly sensible --- not everyone
wants to be a computer hobbyist. But the Linux folks remind me of
the earliest days of computing, when all of us had to know how to
tinker with the software and hardware just to survive.
That's how it is now with home users of Linux. It is a terrific
operating system, and the people who use it at home are generally
knowledgeable and smart. Many have the zeal of a missionary who has
discovered the ultimate truth and wants to spread the word. So they
urge me to write about Linux.
