Segment Two-The care and feeding of an Open Source Community - How Open Source development projects really work.
Tonight we are joined by Eugene Eric Kim to discuss Open Source Communities, and a report on the subject, created by Kim that is now available. This report describes what open source communities are and how they work. It cites relevant research and presents original case studies of two open source projects: TouchGraph and SquirrelMail. It then identifies patterns of collaboration shared by these projects, and describes how these patterns might apply to other types of communities. Finally, it reviews what is still not well understood about open source communities, and proposes several paths for further research.
Eugene is Executive Director and cofounder of Blue Oxen
Associates. Previously, he worked as an independent consultant --
specializing in software development, project management, and
strategic planning -- and was Senior Technical Editor at Dr. Dobb's
Journal. From 2000 to 2002, he worked closely with Doug Engelbart
on the Open Hyperdocument System, and served on the Core Planning
Committee of Engelbart's Bootstrap Alliance. Eugene has written for
a variety of publications, and is currently writing a book on the
history of free software. He received his A.B. in History and
Science from Harvard University.
