"I'm doing the Atkins diet, and so far it works pretty well. You don't count the calories you eat, but it does help to count calories you expend through exercise.

"The one problem I have with doing any diet is that I'm a writer and a geek. I try to take hikes, long walks, bike rides, and find other ways to exercise, but I spend an inordinate amount of time on my gluteus maximus writing, programming, and performing other sedentary operations.

"I have a feeling other geeks have the same problem. As a result, I came up with a brief guide to help computer geeks--in particular, the geeks who are fans of Linux--count the calories they expend during the day. Here follows that informal guide, grouped by topic..."
