"In yet another display of strong support for freeware, Brazil's federal government promoted from Aug. 18 to 22 the 'Legislative Free Software Week,' a joint initiative of the House of Representatives and the Federal Senate.

"Since Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of the left-wing Workers' Party (PT) took office as Brazil's president in January, the government has been very clear about its bias towards open source software. Members of PT argue that the country pays US$1.2 billion per year in royalties and licenses to use proprietary software and that open source would allow transference of programming know-how to Brazil..."
