PR: LindowsOS 4.5 Launches Today

Dec 16, 2003, 20:30 (9 Talkback[s])

Lindows.com Inc. announced today the immediate availability of LindowsOS 4.5. This latest version taps into free worldwide calling technology by integrating SIP software into the LindowsOS operating system. LindowsOS 4.5 also delivers remote desktop sharing, integrated search features, and translation tools that place six different languages at users' fingertips.

"Integrating search, SIP, and translation tools demonstrates that Linux is taking a leadership role in innovation in the operating system business," said Michael Robertson, chief executive officer of Lindows.com Inc. "In addition, our partnerships with leaders in the technology business who are incorporating services and software into LindowsOS demonstrate Linux's acceptance into mainstream desktop computing."

LindowsOS 4.5 is the first operating system to fully integrate direct access to the industry leaders of web search, translation, and e-commerce services, including Amazon.com, Yahoo!, and eBay. For the first time, search functionality is a core feature of the PC experience. Highlighted text within any webpage can be searched on with a single mouse-click through Amazon's book search, catalogs, eBay auctions, glossaries, Google's indexes, image databases, Yahoo! Shopping search engines, and more. In addition, the operating system also includes dial-up access with United Online, the industry's leading provider of affordable Internet connectivity.

LindowsOS 4.5 also features language translation, allowing pages to be translated from or into six languages -- English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese -- with a single click. This integrated translation can be seen at www.lindows.com/translation.

LindowsOS 4.5 enables free worldwide calling with built-in SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) technology. SIP (www.sipphone.com) allows worldwide phone calls to be made, at no cost, over broadband cables, turning common PCs into free global calling machines. LindowsOS 4.5's SIP integration gives every user a unique number from which to send and receive calls; it also includes sophisticated four-way conferencing abilities, as well as full 800 number access from any location worldwide. To make a call, users simply open the program on their computer, which has a virtual keypad similar to a telephone, and enter the SIP phone number of anyone with a SIPphone, Videophone, or SIP-enabled computer. LindowsOS will initiate the voice call -- just like a traditional telephone, minus the high cost.

Additional upgrades found in LindowsOS 4.5 include expanded hardware support to enhance the Plug & Play experience that allows peripheral devices to be automatically detected and working instantly, as well as the latest versions of pre-loaded software, including games, Internet suite, productivity programs, and more. LindowsOS 4.5 also includes all of the features of LindowsOS Laptop Edition, including power management capabilities and expanded WiFi card support. For a full description of new features in LindowsOS 4.5, visit www.lindows.com/newfeatures.

LindowsOS 4.5 is available pre-loaded on certified computers from a wide range of retailers listed at www.lindows.com/featured, or at www.lindows.com/buy. Current LindowsOS customers can download the new version from their my.lindows account immediately.
