"I've been wanting to introduce my wife to Linux for quite some
time on her old Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop, but there always seemed
to be that one little reason to put it off, be it the inability to
use her WiFi card, the fact that Linux doesn't work well with
laptop standby, or the venerable 'get your geek stuff away from
me!' retort. Well, after the latest iteration of the 'install
windows, install apps, watch windows grow slower and slower over
time,' we finally decided to go ahead and make the switch, and then
let her use the laptop for a short trial period and decide whether
to keep Linux or move back to Windows. So this past weekend marked
the time I took to back up her data and programs from Windows and
make the move to Ubuntu version 6.06 Dapper Drake.
"However, I had some difficulties right away, most notably the
issues I had with the LiveCD installer. It was very slow on her
system--probably a combination of low memory, slow cd-rom, and slow
Celeron processor--but the worst problem was that the installer
would hang the system whenever it got to the partition editor
(gparted)..."
