"Back in my earlier post on Configuration management of *nix I talked about the fact that, for Linux to become more viable as an enterprise desktop platform, it needed at least two things--good management tools and another which I alluded to and will talk about here. That 2nd thing is a good standardized API and rich toolset for developing applications. I also mentioned previously that when I worked in IT for a large financial services firm, we opted for Windows NT 3.5 instead of Sun workstations on everyone’s desktop. Part of the big reason for that was the far superior availability of shrink wrap software..."
