"Microsoft today launched an update of its OpenXML and ODF translator for its Excel and Powerpoint applications and pledged to keep churning out more documentation to enable interoperability--and more patents to protect that IP.

"At an event in Cambridge, Mass., Microsoft's interoperability chief Tom Robertson announced the document interoperability initiative, availability of version 1.1 of the OpenXML/ODF translator in conjunction with Novell and plans to release a beta version of documentation for more than 30,000 protocols within two months..."
