"For some time now we have been talking about
Splashtop, the Linux-based instant-on desktop that we've seen on
Asus notebooks and motherboards, as well as the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e
and the VooDoo Envy 133. Splashtop solves the problem of having a
bloated OS (like Vista) on a computer with limited power, but it
currently has to come from the factory on a notebook, netbook, or
motherboard.
"Phoenix Technologies, who is well known for their BIOS
products, has recently countered with HyperSpace. HyperSpace is an
instant-on desktop environment that runs independently of your main
operating system. It gives users access to most of what they want
to do without the complications of a full OS. The environment comes
in two flavors: Hybrid ($59.95/year) and Dual ($39.95/year). Using
Hybrid, which is aimed at mainstream notebooks, HyperSpace and
Windows run alongside one another and the user can switch from one
to the other. In Dual you can run one or the other, generally
starting up HyperSpace and then loading Windows as necessary."
