"As we come to the end of Akkana Peck's excellent series on mastering GRUB2, it's not clear what advantages it has over legacy GRUB, or even good old LILO. It seems it's gone backwards. In today's installment we learn how to translate some common and mysterious error messages, and how to manage a multi-boot system with GRUB2.

"The last two grub2 articles (Part 1, Part 2)have covered how to clean up your grub2 boot menu and make it look prettier. But writing grub2 entries can be frustrating, too. Here are some possible solutions and workarounds.

"Translating grub-ese

"While you're debugging your grub2 entries, you may make some (gasp!) mistakes. And the error messages aren't always as clear as they could be.

"The one I saw most was "error: You need to load the kernel first". That one actually means "You got the name of the kernel wrong: you probably said /boot/vmlinuz when you meant just /vmlinuz."
